You will be employed on a temporary basis for up to one school term as part of the learning support programme for the schooling of refugee children and adolescents.

The tasks you could be involved while working are wide-ranging: you might teach refugees, support them in their learning or help in all-day activities – depending on the needs of local general and vocational schools.

You can apply if you

• have a teaching qualification or
• have a degree from a university or university of applied sciences or have completed vocational training, or
• you are studying to become a teacher.

A linguistic identity between the external substitute and the refugee children to be taught is required. This means that you must be able to communicate school content to the children.

You do not need to provide any proof of your German language skills for recruitment purposes. However, a face-to-face interview will determine whether you have sufficient basic knowledge of German.

You can contact the school counsellors for migration at the state education authorities and the school counsellor for vocational schools at the Ministry of Education and Child Day Care (in short: school counsellors, see “Where do I apply?” below for addresses) by e-mail.

Please enclose initial supporting documents (see application documents below). Should there be any need to educate refugee pupils at a school, a face-to-face meeting will be arranged with you. The interview will be conducted by the respective school management with the involvement of the school councillors.

The interview serves to evaluate whether you can deal appropriately with the pupils, are pedagogically suitable, and have the necessary expertise and language skills.

If the interview is positive, further documents will be requested for recruitment purposes (see application documents below). Once the documents have been checked, you will be sent an employment contract.

Your pay scale grouping will be determined by the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states (TV-L) and will depend on your educational qualifications and the scope of employment, starting with pay group 10 TV-L.

The documents must be submitted in German. Foreign-language educational certificates must be submitted as a copy in your language of origin and as a copy of the translation in German.

You must submit a copy of your certificates with your application. 

Exception for certificates obtained in Ukraine: If you are unable to provide a copy of your certificates that you obtained in Ukraine, it is sufficient to provide information about the type of certificate (9th grade, 11th grade, Bachelor’s degree, etc.) and the following information about the certificate: 

• Series,
• Number,
• Surname, first name (in Cyrillic letters),
• Patronymic (in Cyrillic letters).

All this data is on your diploma. If you do not know this information, you can apply for a self-disclosure via a website of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine or a service commissioned by the Ukrainian Ministry. This will require a qualified electronic signature.

If possible, please send us your certificates translated into German.

No, you must bear the costs of any translations yourself.

If need be, the education authority where you will have a face-to-face interview will call in an interpreter. You will not have to pay any costs for this.

Yes, if you were born after 1970, you must present a valid immunisation certificate against measles. This is verified by means of confirmation from a doctor, e.g. by presenting your vaccination card. Please use the published form for this and contact a general practitioner (GP).

If you do not yet have a valid protection status against measles, you can still apply. Proof must be submitted before you are employed by the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state school service.

Yes, you can also apply. We will check whether you can either be deployed as an external substitute or whether you even fulfil the requirements to be able to apply for the positions in the regular application and recruitment process if you are aiming to be permanently employed in the teaching profession.

If your residence permit authorises you to take up gainful employment, the data will be automatically transferred from the Residents’ Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt) to the tax office. If you are moving from abroad for the first time, you will receive your tax identification number (“Steuer-ID”) by post from the Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt, Bundeszentralamt für Steuern) after registering with the Residents’ Registration Office. As soon as you have received your tax ID number (IdNo) from the BZSt, you must give it to the school counsellor. 

As long as you have not yet received your tax ID from the BZSt, the employer can deduct income tax for a maximum period of three months according to the tax characteristics known to them (tax class, number of children, religious affiliation). Alternatively, you can obtain a certificate for wage tax deduction from the tax office and present it to your employer.

If you have not received a letter from the BZSt within three months of registering with the Residents’ Registration Office, you can provide the BZSt with your personal details. The Federal Central Tax Office will then contact the Residents’ Registration Office and inform you of your tax ID.

In order to be able to hire you, please fill out the form “Declaration regarding convictions” (“Erklärung über Strafen”) and send it to the school counsellor.

The school counsellor will send you another form “Declaration for submission to the registration office” (“Erklärung zur Vorlage bei der Meldebehörde”), which you can then use to apply for the extended certificate of good conduct at the local citizens’ office (Bürgeramt). The extended certificate of good conduct is usually sent directly to the hiring authority by the Federal Office of Justice within two weeks.
